Chapter 19
I decided to leave that document with Lani so Trudi can look at it more carefully when she’s up for it. I head back towards the library for work, internally crossing my fingers that I find some additional information for her. But this time I won’t hand it over to Deb, I’ll tuck it aside and take it to Trudi. I park my truck in the lot, and the crew is standing over by the entrance, the sun shining brightly on their yellow hard hats. I grab my hat and head over and join the crown.
“Nice of you to join us, Wallace.” Walter spouts.
“It’s eight a.m., did I miss something?”
“Yeah, seven a.m. start time. You’re late.”
“Fuck, sorry man. No one told me.” He shakes his head.
“Don’t let it happen again.” He turns back to the crew and goes over what he wants to be done today. “We have three weeks to get the interior back up to code. Deb Bracken wants to reopen the exhibit as soon as possible, so we need to get working. An old building in Norfolk was demolished, and they’re saving the brick for us to reuse here, so that’ll be delivered next week. Turns out the guy that built this library, built multiple buildings in the state, so even if it’s not a perfect match, it’ll be close enough to be able to restore it,” he says.
We work diligently throughout the day, clearing more rubble and I keep my eyes peeled for more documents. Once the bottom floor is done, we use a lift to get to the second-floor offices. We need to get all the file cabinets, desks and furniture out before demolishing the floor that’s left. We spread out, so there’s not a lot of weight in one particular area, because all we need is another accident. I carefully enter the office and scan the room, papers on the floor, wet and smeared. I pick up a handful, and nothing is legible due to the water damage.
I try to open the file cabinet, and it’s locked, so I open the desk drawer and dig for a key, but there’s not one. “Hey, Walter?” I call down through the open floor.
“Yeah!” He hollers back.
“Can we get one of those lifts over here? We need to get this furniture out of here.”
I hear him grumble, but a few minutes later one of the guys brings the lift over and raises it with one of the guys on it. We carefully lift the old metal desk and slide it onto the platform before adding the file cabinet and other stuff. “Maybe we should’ve emptied it out first?” He asks me.
“We got it done, quit your bitching,” I mumble, hopefully not loud enough for him to hear. But I get an evil eye, so I assume he did. “You can lower it!” I yell down as he and I step onto the lift. Once at the bottom, we can breathe a little. The floors are unstable, and I’m actually surprised it didn’t collapse on us as we moved the furniture along the floor.
